AusNet is investing in a new zone substation and expanding the electricity network in Beveridge, a critical project that will improve supply to existing customers and enable the northern corridor’s accelerating growth.
AusNet Executive General Manager Distribution, Andrew Linnie, said the two-stage project would help unlock future growth in this rapidly developing part of Northern Melbourne by providing the electricity infrastructure to support existing and new communities.

“This region is reaching capacity, so our investment will support future development across the Beveridge area, while strengthening the resilience and reliability of the network for our existing customers,” said Mr Linnie.
Stage One of construction, representing an investment of $85 million, has involved ground preparation and drainage works, installation of zone substation structures, transformers, control rooms and construction of new overhead and underground electricity connections.
“Despite challenging weather and ground conditions, our crews completed 15 kilometres of underground works in just eight weeks, tunnelling beneath the Hume Freeway to install new high-voltage electricity connections.”
“These new underground cables and overhead powerlines will connect the facility to the existing electricity network across Beveridge, Wallan, Mickleham and Donnybrook. It will also be protected by bushfire mitigation technology,” said Mr Linnie.
Stage Two of this project will commence in 2027, delivering further network upgrades. Completion of this stage is targeted for March 2028.
As these works progress customers may experience temporary impacts such as changed traffic conditions, construction noise or planned power outages. Customers directly affected will be contacted in advance.
