We’re building a new zone substation and new powerlines in Beveridge to support growing communities across Melbourne’s north. As areas like Beveridge, Wallan, Kalkallo and Wollert continue to grow, more homes, businesses and industrial developments need more electricity. This project will provide the extra capacity needed to support the projected growth and maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply.
Why do we need this project?
Melbourne’s northern suburbs are growing quickly. To keep up with rising demand, we need to build new infrastructure to support more homes, businesses and services in the area. The Beveridge Zone Substation will help increase the power supply available to meet future residential and commercial demand.
What are we building?
We’re building a new zone substation in Beveridge and installing new overhead powerlines and underground cables to connect it to the existing network.
Where are we working?
The new zone substation will be built at 565 Old Sydney Road, Beveridge.
As we build, we will also install new powerlines and cables in Wallan, Beveridge, Mickleham and Donnybrook to connect these areas to the new zone substation.
What this means for you
If you live near the Beveridge Zone Substation, you may notice construction vehicles along Old Sydney Road and at the site.
There will also be some works near residential areas in Wallan when we install and upgrade powerlines, poles and cables. If you live in this area, we will tell you about any traffic changes or other impacts.
We’ll keep the community informed through project updates and direct communications.
Project timing
There are three construction stages. Stage 1 started in April 2026.
Stage 1 - April 2026 to December 2026
We will:
- prepare ground and drainage works
- install zone substation structures, transformers and control rooms
- install the overhead and underground lines that will connect into the zone substation.
We will also:
- install an underground cable from Old Sydney Road to Rowes Lane to William Street, including crossings beneath the Northern Highway
- replace overhead powerlines along William Street to the Hume Freeway
- cross under the Hume Freeway and connect to existing powerlines in Station Street.
Stage 2 - December 2026 to June 2027
We will add and upgrade lines.
Stage 3 - in approximately ten years
We will install an additional transformer to meet population growth forecasts.
Safety and reliability
The new zone substation will include bushfire mitigation technology known as Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiters. This technology will help provide fire protection on the new powerlines.
This project will also help improve reliability by increasing network capacity in a fast-growing area.
