Global and local momentum is growing for hydrogen as an alternative energy source and AusNet has a finger on the pulse. Whilst hydrogen is still very much considered an emerging energy source, AusNet has joined leading industry group Hydrogen Mobility Australia (HMA) which has the vision to progress Australia’s shift towards a future hydrogen society.
HMA is Australia’s most influential hydrogen energy industry group and has a growing membership which includes Siemens, Caltex, BP, Viva Energy, BOC Gas, Air Liquide, Australian Gas Infrastructure Group and founding members Toyota and Hyundai. Together, these leading industry players are promoting discussion around relevant regulations, codes and standards, as well as developing commercial hydrogen energy lighthouse projects.
As the only Australian utility that not only owns and operates regulated gas and electricity networks, but provides energy management solutions to a range of residential and commercial sectors through their unregulated operations, AusNet is in the unique position to store and distribute hydrogen and its derivatives (including ammonia), across Australia. Hydrogen is also a key component of “Gas Vision 2050” which was developed by Australia’s peak gas industry bodies including AusNet to demonstrate how gas can continue to provide Australian’s with reliable and affordable energy in a low carbon energy future.
"Our HMA membership represents another serious commitment to a future of clean energy in the Australian energy landscape" said AusNet’ Executive General Manager – Commercial Energy Services, Chad Hymas. “Hydrogen could play a huge part in this energy transition and it’s critical that we consider our potential role in a hydrogen society. Joining the HMA is a positive and exciting step towards this and we are proud to be an integral part of the discussion."
With the momentum for hydrogen energy growing AusNet will continue to collaborate with leading industry groups and is well poised to embrace future opportunities as a member of the HMA.
