Update on GoodGrid CPD values and billing - 10 June 2022

We recently advised you of a billing issue that prevented us from applying the corrected CPD values. We have now resolved that issue. We’ll reissue billing to retailers with the corrected CPD values on Tuesday 14 June 2022. This will be backdated to 1 April 2022. Your retailer will pass on any required adjustments to your bill in line with their processes. You should contact your retailer with any questions about your bill.

Update on GoodGrid CPD values and billing – 13 May 2022 

Due to customer data issues, some customers in our GoodGrid Critical Peak Demand (CPD) program were not notified of the CPD days declared on 25 and 31 January 2022.

Normally, your CPD value for the following April to March period is set by applying the average of your maximum demand across all 5 declared CPD days. Due to the customer data issue, we’ll individually assess all customers on our CPD tariffs, and apply the CPD value that results in the best value for customers.

What does this mean for you?

If you weren’t aware of one or both of the CPD days, the maximum demand for those days won’t be taken into account. If you were aware of both CPD days and responded, your efforts will not be wasted as we’ll include this in the calculation.

Billing issues

Due to system constraints, we’re unable to apply the corrected CPD values that should apply to billing from 1 April 2022. We’re working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, customers will be billed based on CPD values from all 5 days. Once resolved, we’ll re-issue billing to retailers who will then pass any adjustments onto customers in line with their billing processes. Customers should contact their retailer for any questions relating to adjustments or payment of bills.

What is GoodGrid CPD?

The GoodGrid CPD program encourages businesses on CPD tariffs to reduce electricity use during periods where energy demand is high.

We nominate 5 short periods between 1 December and 31 March where demand on the network is higher. During these periods, participating businesses can reduce their energy demand and help to take pressure off the network. Peak demand periods happen on weekdays (excluding public holidays), on hot summer afternoons, usually between 3pm and 7pm.

The GoodGrid program helps to support the broader community’s energy needs when the energy demand is high. It also reduces the need to invest in network upgrades to cater for brief periods of high demand.

How will my business benefit from participating?

Businesses who reduce their energy demand during peak periods have the opportunity to reduce their electricity bills over a 12 month period through lower CPD charges (April-March).

We calculate your CPD charge using the average of your maximum demand during the 5 CPD periods. This charge is a component of the network costs that you are charged on your unbundled power bill. By reducing your demand during CPD windows, you can lower your CPD component and save money on network charges.

Getting the most out of GoodGrid CPD for your business

There are a few ways that you can maximise the benefits for your business:


Respond early

To make the most of the GoodGrid program, your energy demand should be reduced for the entire CPD window. Respond early to ensure that your demand is lowered before the window starts and returns to normal after the window ends.


Participate every year

GoodGrid CPSD is a recurring program. We recalculate the CPD component of your network charges every year based on the 5 CPD windows. By participating each year, you can contribute to your CPD charge being reduced from 1 April to 31 March.


Stay informed

We send SMS notifications to confirm CPD days 24 hours before each window. If a CPD day is cancelled, we will notify you by SMS.

To register for SMS notifications about CPD days, send your National Meter Identifier (NMI) to 0418 176 593. You can find your NMI on your power bill.

If you’ve already registered for SMS notifications, you don’t need to register again.

  • How does GoodGrid Critical Peak Demand work?

    Each summer, between 1 December and 31 March, we nominate 5 Critical Peak Demand (CPD) days. These days generally happen on days with extreme temperatures or consecutive days of hot weather. On each CPD day, between 3pm and 7pm AEDT (2pm-6pm as per your meter), you are encouraged to reduce electricity demand to help support the community’s energy needs and minimise the CPD charge on your electricity bill.

  • What is a CPD charge?

    The CPD charge is a monthly charge included in the network component of your electricity bill. The CPD charge is calculated by multiplying a fixed price (the CPD price) by the average of your peak electricity demand during the CPD window on each of the five nominated CPD days. Your average peak electricity demand is measured in kilovolt-ampere (kVA). The diagram above shows how we calculate your CPD charge.

    We recalculate the average peak electricity demand component of your CPD charge annually. By lowering your peak demand during each CPD window, you are likely to reduce your average peak electricity demand, and therefore reduce the amount of CPD charge you must pay each month for the next 12 months.

  • How can my business reduce its electricity demand?

    Your business can reduce electricity use in several different ways. For example, you could:

    • Switch to another form of electricity supply like a generator or battery storage
    • Shift your electricity use some that you are using more electricity outside the CPD window
    • Scale back or shut down production during the CPD window.

    Case study

    This example shows how participating in the GoodGrid CPD program can reduce electricity costs for a business.

    In this example, the hypothetical CPD charge is $5 per kVA per month. Business customers ‘Amanda’ and ‘Boris’ each have an average maximum demand of 500 kVA between 3 pm and 7 pm in summer.

    Amanda signs up to the GoodGrid CPD program. She is notified about upcoming CPD days and decides to switch part of her load to a generator during each CPD window. By using a generator, Amanda reduces her peak demand during each CPD window from 500 kVA to 300 kVA. Boris uses electricity as he normally would and so Boris’s peak demand during each CPD window remains 500 kVA.

    After the GoodGrid CPD Program ends, AusNet Services recalculates Amanda’s average peak energy demand. For the next 12 months, Amanda’s CPD charge is calculated using an average peak demand of 300 kVA. Her CPD charge will be $5 x 300 kVA = $1,500. This CPD charge will be one component of her total network charge.

    The network component of Amanda’s electricity bill is now $1,000 lower than it would have been if she had not actively reduced her peak demand during the CPD windows.

    However, because Boris’s average peak demand remains the same, his CPD charge remains unchanged. His charge will be $5 x 500 kVA = $2,500.

  • Who can participate?

    If your business uses more than 160 MWh of electricity per year and you are assigned to a CPD tariff, you are already part of the program. Almost all our large business customers are already on a CPD tariff, but to confirm, please contact your electricity retailer (the company who sends your power bills).

  • How will I be notified of a CPD day?

    If you register your mobile phone number with the GoodGrid CPD program you will receive SMS notifications about CPD days. You will receive notifications about potential CPD days up to 7 days before an event and you will receive a notification by 2:00 pm AEDT on the day before a declared CPD day.

  • Will I see the reduction on my bill? 

    The CPD charge forms a part of the total network charge shown on the bill issued by your retailer (the company who sends your power bill). If your business participates in the GoodGrid CPD Program, you will not see the reduction referenced on your bill, however your CPD charge will be lower than it otherwise would have been and your network charge will be lower.
