1.5MW to 5MW

Learn about the timeline, process, and cost of connecting and installing a 1.5MW to 5MW energy generation system.

As of 1st July 2021, and in line with our approved Electricity Distribution Price Review for 2021-2026, we will include in any offers for connection of embedded generation above 1.5MW an amount to cover our tax costs arising from connection services revenues.

If you are considering a medium scale energy generation system this page is for you. Systems in this range are usually commercial or industrial systems connecting into the AusNet Medium Voltage (11KV/ 22KV) network and are between 1.5MW and 5MW in generating capacity.

AusNet treats all applications between 1.5MW to 5MW under the negotiated connection framework as nominated in National Electricity Rules (NER) Chapter 5A.  For a description of the different connection services and the connection applicants rights under these process please see AusNet's connection policy (PDF, 1.4MB)

Below you will find information about the process, timeline and costs involved in connecting to the grid.

For connections greater than 5MW please see Connections above 5MW.

For connections to the Victorian transmission network (220KV and above), the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) manages the connection process and is your main point of contact.

See our distribution infrastructure map.

Time frames and process

There are 6 main stages in the process to connect capacities of 1.5 MW to 5 MW to the AST Distribution Network. For a detailed outline of the full connection process, please see the Distribution Connection Process Map (PDF, 93 KB).
