[Description]: A rapid earth fault current limiter is being constructed in rapid speed.

[Voiceover]: We've been working with the Victorian government to protect our communities from bushfires.

[Description]: An animated rapid earth fault current limiter connected to powerlines.

[Voiceover]: Rapid earth fault current limiters, or REFCLs, are now operating in 22 high-risk areas across the AusNet network.

[Description]: A sped-up construction of a REFCL.

[Voiceover]: This leading-edge bushfire mitigation technology protects over 40,000 square kilometres of our electricity distribution area.

[Description]: A map of the AusNet electricity distribution network.

[Voiceover]: These REFCLs operate across 22 regions of Victoria, the equivalent area of Switzerland.

[Description]: A comparative overlay of Switzerland’s outline beside the network map.

[Voiceover]: REFCLs act like a giant safety switch in the electricity network.

[Description]: An animated switch icon flips to ‘On’.

[Voiceover]: When a powerline falls or comes into contact with something like a tree or animal, REFCLs rapidly cut power to that line, reducing the potential of a fire starting.

[Description]: An animated bird lands on a powerline, triggering a REFCL to turn off power.

[Voiceover]: At the same time, it boosts the voltage in the remaining intact lines so we can keep supplying power to surrounding homes and businesses.

[Description]: An animated REFCL sends electricity to a house.

[Voiceover]: After a few moments, the REFCL checks if the fault is still there.

[Description]: An animated REFCL shuts off electricity from a powerline.

[Voiceover]: If it is, the REFCL switches off power to that line, and we'll send a crew out to investigate and repair the fault.

[Description]: An AusNet crew truck driving along a country road.

[Voiceover]: Otherwise, the REFCL restores power immediately.

[Description]: A REFCL.

[Voiceover]: Most of the time you won't even know this happened. Our REFCLs have operated thousands of times since their installation.

[Description]: Various AusNet employees working at desks.

[Voiceover]: We are continuing to prepare for Victoria's energy future.

[Description]: Two workers in bucket trucks repairing powerlines.

[Voiceover]: by investing in technologies that maintain a safe and reliable network for our customers.

[Description]: A worker in a bucket truck using an insulated pole to repair powerlines.

[Voiceover]: Thanks for your patience and support while we make Victoria a safer place to be.

[Description]: A helicopter flying overhead. Aerial footage of paddocks.
