We regularly test parts of our electricity network to make sure it’s working safely and reliably - especially during bushfire season.
These tests check how the network performs under fault conditions, such as when a powerline is damaged or something makes contact with a powerline. By testing in safe, controlled conditions, we can see how the system responds and fix any weak points before they cause problems.
Why we test the network
Network testing is one of the most effective ways to keep communities safe and reduce the risk of power outages. It helps us:
- find parts of the network that could fail during a fault and replace them before they cause an outage
- stop a single fault from spreading to other parts of the network
- keep the electricity supply more reliable by checking that equipment can handle fault conditions
- meet safety standards for operating and maintaining the network.
How we test the network
We create safe, controlled faults on the network to check how it performs. We then check how the equipment responds when voltage levels change. Any equipment that doesn’t handle these fault conditions the way they should are repaired or replaced, so the network stays strong and safe.
Will my power go out?
Sometimes this testing can cause short outages. We work to keep these to a minimum and customers will get a SMS if this happens. To get SMS updates from us, make sure your electricity retailer (the company you pay your power bills to) has your current mobile number. They’ll pass it onto us so we can send you updates.
We also upgrade or replace any known weak spots before starting the work to reduce the chance of interruptions.
