Large electricity transmission towers running across a field

Overview

We’ve been contracted by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to deliver the Western Renewables Link, a 190km long high-voltage electricity transmission line. The proposed route will run from a new terminal station near Bulgana to Sydenham. AusNet will develop, deliver, operate and maintain the new infrastructure.

Why we’re doing this

The proposed Western Renewables Link will deliver the critical infrastructure needed to unlock the potential of western Victoria as a key Renewable Energy Zone and help deliver clean, reliable energy to all Victorians.

Planning and approvals

After a public inquiry and advisory hearing, the Minister for Planning found that the project’s environmental effects could be acceptably managed, subject to conditions. These include implementing the Environmental Management Framework.

The project’s Planning Scheme Amendment was gazetted on 30 September 2026. This is a significant milestone that establishes the planning controls for the project’s construction and operation.

Further Victorian and Australian government approvals and consents are required before construction can begin.
