Pole-top battery program

Location: Coldstream, Diamond Creek, Ferntree Gully, Heathmont, Knoxfield, Lysterfield, Smiths Beach, Traralgon, Wantirna, Wantirna South

Timeframe: August 2025 to April 2026

Overview

We’re installing pole-top batteries across 10 locations in our electricity distribution network. These batteries are placed in locations where a large amount of solar power is exported to the grid, on new and existing power poles.

During the day, the pole-top batteries charge using excess rooftop solar power. They store this energy and supply it to nearby homes in the evening. Each battery can power approximately 50 homes for up to two hours after sunset.

What are pole-top batteries and how do they work?

Pole-top batteries are a type of energy storage.

This innovative technology stores any excess energy generated by local roof-top solar and our electricity network during low-demand periods (typically during the day). This stored energy is then distributed to the local community in high-demand periods, such as during the evening and in summer.

Pole-top batteries make better use of local solar power, improve supply quality for nearby residents and help reduce or defer network upgrades by managing peak demand on local streets.
