Heywood to Alcoa Portland tower-restoration project

Location: Portland West
Traditional Country: Gunditjmara
Timeframe: Completion by 2028

A row of large transmission towers on a clear day

We're planning a project that involves replacing, strengthening or treating the surface of our steel transmission towers along the Heywood to Alcoa Portland 500kV transmission line. This line provides power to the Portland Aluminium Smelter.

This project is part of our commitment to maintain modern, resilient infrastructure that supports the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to Victorians.

Staged works

This project will be delivered in two stages over several years, starting near the coast and moving inland.

Stage 1

The first stage will focus on nine towers - six near the coast and three inland that have been prioritised for early upgrades based on recent condition assessments.

Stage 2

Stage 2 will address the remaining 18 towers, with the scope of work to be confirmed following further inspections and assessments.

Landholders

We are consulting with landholders who have these towers on their properties. We will work with them to minimise disruption to their land, businesses and farming operations throughout the project.

Timeline

We’re currently in the planning stage, collaborating with our design and construction partners to finalise tower designs and prepare for construction.
