What did we do?
We’ve reinforced 60 steel transmission towers between the Murray Switching Station and the Dederang Terminal Station along the Murray Valley Highway, Omeo Highway and Kiewa Valley Highway.
These towers were designed and constructed between 1959 and 1965 using the State Electricity Commission of Victoria’s design codes that applied at that time.
This design code has now been replaced with new standards.
Although in good condition, a risk assessment found that during high intensity winds, these 60 towers posed safety risks due to their proximity to major roads. By adding reinforcements to these towers, we've reduced the safety risk to the community during high intensity winds.
The upgrade works focused on two key areas:
- Steel works
Additional steel reinforcements added to the existing tower bodies. - Foundation strengthening
Civil reinforcement works undertaken around existing tower foundations.

Landowners were directly impacted by these upgrades. We’re committed to working closely with landowners to minimise any disruptions.
Travel disruptions
Increased traffic along the highways, including heavy machinery, as crews move between work sites.
Are there any planned outages?
There were no planned power outages related to this project.
We've worked with an environmental consultant to protect important biodiversity in the area.
