AusNet has started remediation works on the former Portland Gasworks site to make it cleaner, safer and ready for future use.
Almost 150 years after it was first commissioned, the former Portland Gasworks site on Glenelg Street is undergoing a transformation.
A large white tent, known as an odour control enclosure (OCE) has been constructed on the site, to aid in the removal of contaminated soil, groundwater protection and preparing the site for future use.
AusNet General Manager Gas Network Operations & Delivery Chris Senaratne said the team on site is utilising best-practice environmental methods to reduce community impacts.
“All waste soil will be tested and sent to licensed facilities and groundwater and stormwater will be managed to prevent off-site impacts.”
“The site will be contained with secure fencing and there will be regular monitoring of air quality, noise and vibrations,” said Mr Senaratne.
Commissioned in 1878, Portland Gasworks were one of Victoria’s earliest municipally owned gas utilities, which operated for more than 80 years before closing in the late 1950’s.
Community engagement is a top priority throughout the project with updated information being provided via portlandremediation.com
The project, which is being delivered by Ventia, on behalf of AusNet, is expected to conclude in mid-2026.
