Phillip Island energy network upgrades

9 September 2025

AusNet has been working to improve the energy network and power reliability across Phillip Island.

On Wednesday 17 September AusNet will be undertaking bushfire mitigation and maintenance works in Cowes, Rhyll and Ventnor.

To undertake this work safely AusNet will need to turn the power off from 8.00am to approximately 4.00pm, impacting around 4,000 customers.

AusNet General Manager Network Operations & Delivery, Ross Young, said these works are essential to maintain a safe and reliable network.

“In addition to our regular inspection program, we have also identified several additional jobs, such as part replacements, which will also be completed on the day, to minimise community disruption.”

“These works will also help with bushfire preparedness to protect the community ahead of summer,” said Mr Young.

Customers affected will have already received a notification from AusNet about the planned outage.

To support the community, AusNet’s Emergency Management Mobile Assistance (EMMA) vehicle will be available at the Berninneit Cultural Centre to provide device charging facilities during the outage period.

“We know that it’s inconvenient to be without electricity so we’re completing this work on one day to minimise the impact on the community.”

“We thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we make these important upgrades to the network,” said Mr Young.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for being without power:

  • o Charge battery packs so they're ready to power your mobile phones.
  • o If you have an electric water pump, stock up on bottled water.
  • o Make sure you can open your garage or fence manually, if they are electric.
  • o Fill an esky with ice to keep your food and drinks cool.
  • o DO NOT bring outdoor gas appliances inside your home.
  • o Keep at least one light on in the house so you know when your electricity is back on.
