AusNet, owner and operator of Victoria’s electricity transmission network, will host a 30 Megawatt (MW) 30 Megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System which is to be installed at the Ballarat Terminal Station in Warrenheip, Victoria.
This 33-million-dollar project will see the construction of Victoria’s first utilities scale Lithium-Ion battery storage system, which once complete will be the size of nine shipping containers and have the capacity to power more than 20,000 homes for an hour before being recharged.
Funded by the Victorian Government, Federal Government Agency ARENA, AusNet and EnergyAustralia, the project was formally announced today by Victorian Energy Minister the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio and Federal Energy Minister the Hon. Josh Frydenberg.
The energy sector is experiencing a rapid transformation. This project demonstrates AusNet’ commitment to ensuring all available technologies are utilised to provide the most resilient energy supply.
“The Ballarat battery storage system is another milestone in the transformation of Victoria’s energy supply system and demonstrates how business and government can work together for the benefit of all Victorians” said AusNet Managing Director Nino Ficca.
“Locating the battery within AusNet’ Ballarat Terminal Station means it will be fully integrated into the electricity grid, where it will contribute to meeting peak energy demand, and also help enhance the stability and security of the State’s energy supply,” Mr Ficca said.
The Project has been developed through the Victorian Government Energy Storage Initiative, and is being undertaken by a consortium led by Spotless Sustainability Services, and also comprising retailer EnergyAustralia, energy storage provider Fluence, and AusNet.
