AusNet map clears up confusion over tree clearing around powerlines

14 April 2026

Residents confused about who is responsible for clearing trees and shrubs near powerlines can now get a clear answer, thanks to a new online interactive map launched by AusNet.

The interactive vegetation management map enables customers to quickly check whether vegetation on nature strips and other public land is managed by their local council or by AusNet’s vegetation management partners, simply by entering a location.

For many years, responsibility for managing trees near powerlines has varied across Victoria depending on local arrangements and legislation. This has often resulted in residents being passed between councils, AusNet and contractors, with no clear resolution.

AusNet Vegetation Management Lead, Spencer Few, said the new tool was designed to make things easier for customers.

“People just want to know who to contact so their query can be answered,” Mr Few said.

“In some areas councils are responsible, in others it’s AusNet, and that hasn’t always been easy to work out. This map takes away the confusion and gives customers an answer straight away.”

Mr Few said vegetation enquiries were one of the most common reasons customers contact AusNet, particularly in regional areas with established trees.

“By using the map, customers can save time, avoid frustration and contact the right organisation first,” he said.

“It also helps our teams and councils respond faster, because enquiries are going to the right place from the start.”

The map is free to use and available on the AusNet website, helping customers self‑serve with confidence and get quicker outcomes for queries about vegetation near powerlines.

“This simple map will help our teams respond faster to enquiries and give customers confidence to self‑serve,” said Mr Few.
