AusNet invests in regional traineeships

15 August 2025

AusNet is supporting Victoria’s energy future through a targeted investment in regional jobs, launching nine three-year distribution traineeships: six in regional Victoria and three in Melbourne.

“This is a great opportunity to enter and play your part in Australia’s transition to net zero,” said AusNet Executive General Manager Distribution, Andrew Linnie.

“We are creating meaningful careers in our regional communities, building the skills needed for the energy transition and helping Victoria meet its renewable energy and emissions targets,” said Mr Linnie.

AusNet is committing over $3 million to the program, offering a $78,000 annual salary, hands-on experience, and the chance to live and work locally. At the end of three years, trainees will graduate with a nationally recognised Advanced Diploma of ESI – Power Systems and a clear pathway into a permanent role.

Network Connection Traineeship roles will be on offer in Sale, Bairnsdale, Seymour and Leongatha. Traineeships in Access Planning will be available in Beaconsfield, Seymour and Traralgon. Distribution Control & Operations roles will be offered in Melbourne.

Trainees will learn face-to-face alongside fellow trainees, building strong professional networks and shared knowledge. While everyone completes the same qualification, the learning will be tailored to one of three specialised technical streams.

To apply for these traineeships, you’ll need to have completed Year 12 by the end of 2025 with strong performances in maths/science, have unrestricted working rights in Australia, access to a vehicle and a valid driver's licence, and be able to travel monthly for training if your role is based outside of Melbourne.

After completing the program, trainees will be fully qualified and ready to apply for a permanent role within their chosen stream.

“This is a unique opportunity to work in the energy industry, make a difference in the communities we operate in, and leave a positive legacy,” said Mr Linnie.

Applications for the trainee program open on 4 August and close on 4 September 2025. Interviews will take place in September and October, with formal offers in November. The AusNet Traineeships will begin in 2026.
