AusNet invests 100M to strengthen electricity supply across the Mallee

Two new transformers will soon be operational at the Red Cliffs Terminal Station, as part of AusNet’s $100 million investment in critical electricity transmission infrastructure supporting communities, businesses and renewable energy across north-west Victoria.

AusNet Executive General Manager Transmission, Liz Ryan, said the upgrade would strengthen a critical part of Victoria's electricity transmission network serving the Mallee.

"Red Cliffs Terminal Station has supported communities across north-west Victoria for more than 60 years. This investment will help maintain a reliable flow of electricity into the local distribution network that supplies homes, farms and businesses across the region,” said Ms Ryan.

As part of the project, AusNet is installing modern monitoring and control technology that will provide greater visibility of the network and help operators respond more quickly to any issues.

Works started in December 2025 to replace the ageing equipment that has been operating since the terminal station was established in 1963.

Red Cliffs Terminal Station is the main transmission connection point serving the Mildura region and surrounding communities, including Merbein, Robinvale, Ouyen, Red Cliffs, Colignan and Werrimull. Approximately 27,000 customers receive electricity through the local distribution network supplied via the station. The station also strengthens energy security by providing a critical interconnection between Victoria and New South Wales.

“The Red Cliffs Terminal Station supports regional renewable energy generation, including close to 200 MW of large-scale solar generation and plays an important role in the Murray River Renewable Energy Zone.”

“This investment will help keep that infrastructure reliable as renewable energy development continues to grow,” said Ms Ryan.

Two additional new transformers will be delivered and installed during 2027, with the project scheduled for completion in February 2028.
