AusNet has completed a $1.8 million wildlife protection program aimed at reducing power outages and protecting Victoria's native possums.
The program has delivered animal-proofing upgrades at 260 sites across Belgrave, Montrose, Warrandyte, Nilma and Upwey, targeting one of the leading causes of electricity outages on AusNet's network.
AusNet Head of Fault Delivery, Michael Walton, said the sites were identified through analysis of areas experiencing higher-than-average levels of animal-related faults.
"By targeting these high-impact locations, we're improving reliability and reducing outages for customers in communities most affected by animal-related faults," said Mr Walton.
Data shows that animals are responsible for more than 10 percent of power outages across AusNet's network.
“These incidents can damage equipment and often require extensive repairs before power can be safely restored,” said Mr Walton.
The program included:
- Protective plastic guards to prevent animals accessing powerlines.
- Rotating spinners that stop animals gaining a foothold on powerlines.
- New transformer equipment designed to discourage possums from nesting.
This activity highlighted how smart infrastructure investments can benefit customers and create a safer environment for one of Victoria's most recognisable native species,” he said.
AusNet will continue monitoring network performance to measure the long-term impact of the upgrades on reliability and wildlife safety.
