Project Updates - 2017

February - Out of Hours Works

To progress with our rebuild project works it is necessary to conduct Out of Hours Works on Saturday, 11th February. Works will commence at 7am and finish at 5pm.

The delivery of precast panels for the construction of a transformer bay will take place on this day. The trucks will travel down Mary Street to the main entrance to our site.  We will endeavour to keep disruption to the community to a minimum.

For details on these works please refer to Out Of Hours Works notification.

Landscaping of Mary Street - April

AusNet Services has received approval from Yarra Council for its proposed landscaping for the Mary Street nature strip area in front of our site. There are two stages for these works – they will both involve new planting north and south of our entrance way and the installation of a walking path (including a pram ramp) that will link McConchie Reserve and Allan Bain Reserve.

The new species are native shrubs and trees commonly found in the area and have been selected in conjunction with Yarra Council.

Stage 1 (south of our entrance way) – the planting and path installation in this area has been completed. We appreciate the community’s patience during these works.

Stage 2 (north of our entrance way) will occur later in the project. View the plan and planting schedule.

Richmond Terminal Station Overview

The planning permit was granted by the City of Yarra in April 2012.

The project will involve replacing existing ageing outdoor switchgear with more compact equipment housed in three new buildings.  This will result in a more functional and compact design with less visual clutter.
Works commenced in late 2012 and are expected to be completed in mid-2018.

We look forward to working with the community to bring about an improved Richmond Terminal Station.

About the upgrade

Located in Mary St, Richmond, the Richmond Terminal Station is an integral part of Victoria’s electricity infrastructure. It is one of several high voltage electricity terminal stations that serve inner Melbourne.

We own and operate the electricity transmission network in Victoria, including Richmond Terminal Station, and are therefore responsible for providing the state with a reliable supply of high voltage electricity.

The Richmond Terminal Station

  • Receives High Voltage (220 kilovolts or 220kV) electricity, via transmission lines; and
  • Converts this High Voltage electricity to lower voltages (66 and 22 kilovolts), so distribution businesses CitiPower and United Energy can supply their local customers with electricity.

Electricity terminal stations have a finite lifespan and require upgrading after approximately 50 years. If not replaced periodically, ageing equipment has the potential to cause disruption to power supply and inconvenience to residents and businesses.

The Richmond Terminal Station, which was last rebuilt in the 1960s, is at the end of its operational life and is due to be rebuilt and modernised.

The upgrade of the Richmond Terminal Station will involve replacing most of the ageing equipment on site with new plant and equipment incorporating the latest technology, to enable the future demand for electricity in  the state to be met. An objective of the design brief is to upgrade the facility for the benefit of the local community.

Community consultation

We have committed to a program of consultation for the Richmond Terminal Station upgrade.  Significant consultation occured prior to the granting of the planning permit and stakeholder feedback was incorporated, where possible, in the design of the upgraded facility.

We will continue to keep the community informed during the construction period by providing accurate and timely information.
