BRUNSWICK TERMINAL STATION UPGRADE
Located on King Street in East Brunswick, the Brunswick Terminal Station is owned and operated by AusNet Services.
Operational since 1939, the terminal station currently provides electricity through CitiPower’s and Jemena’s electricity distribution network to about 25,000 customers in the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne.
The Brunswick Terminal Station plays an important role in Victoria’s electricity network. In general terms, the facility is like a distribution centre, as it:
- receives high voltage electricity from distant power generation sources via underground cables and overhead transmission towers;
- reduces the electricity voltage for transportation at local street level; and
- distributes the lower voltage electricity via underground cables and overhead wires to businesses and residences.
Project progress update
Works continue to proceed well and on schedule to have the upgraded facility online by the end of 2016. Final site decomissioning and remaining landscaping are scheduled for completion mid-2017.
The Brunswick Terminal Station upgrade was deemed to be necessary as a result of an assessment of Melbourne’s electricity needs by CitiPower and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
The upgrade of the terminal station will help secure the electricity supply to Melbourne’s central business district and inner suburbs, and ultimately supply an additional 65,000 residential and business customers.
The upgrade involves the installation of state-of-the-art electrical equipment housed in architecturally-treated buildings, and buildings no longer required have been removed.
As well as supplying more customers with reliable electricity, we are reducing the footprint of the Brunswick Terminal Station. Selected equipment will be hidden inside architecturally-designed buildings.
To further improve the station’s appearance and contribute to the Merri Creek corridor, we are undertaking extensive landscaping to screen the station from neighbouring properties.
Overall, the facility will be far better suited to its location.
As part of our ongoing commitment to community engagement, nearby residents will be notified about upcoming construction works.
The below table summarises the most recent construction updates.
Community Reference Group
The Project has a Community Reference Group that meets once every two months and provides a communication link between the community and the project team. Members include local residents, Moreland Council and AusNet Services Representatives. Minutes of the meetings are available on the Moreland Council’s website. Please contact us if you’d like to know more.
Our approach to construction
We understand we are operating in a quiet neighbourhood so we are committed to minimising the impact of our works on our neighbours, where practical. Please click here to view our commitments to the community.
For more information about the upgrade, including hours of work and how we will manage construction impacts, please download our project overview brochure. This brochure is also available in Greek and Italian.
The Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) outlines the environmental management and mitigation measures which will be put in place during construction. The CEMP is reviewed regularly to ensure its contents reflect project requirements and site conditions.
We are committed to ongoing consultation with stakeholders and the community and we are always interested in your views and ideas. If you have any questions or comments, please contact our Community Engagement team:
