Apprentice and Trainee Program

As AusNet Services is a key player in the Victorian energy networks, it is vitally important that all our networks of electrical and gas assets are reliable and safe, which is why our apprentices and trainees are so important to our team.

Our Apprentice & Trainee Programs offer an opportunity to develop knowledge acquired at school and work, to gain a formal qualification and develop a career. Fundamental to an AusNet Services apprenticeship or traineeship is our business's belief that worker safety comes first, and the pride we take in being one of the most progressive and reliable energy companies in Australia.

Apprenticeship vs Traineeship

  • An apprenticeship - results in a trade qualification. Our apprentices work on either the transmission or distribution powerlines (line workers) or on equipment in the substations (electrical fitters).
  • A traineeship - is a qualification level above apprenticeship but below an undergraduate degree. People who like traineeships have strong school results (particularly in maths and physics) but are keen to get into the workforce straight away while still continuing to study.

The programs

The Apprentice & Trainee Programs are run over a four year period, whilst our ‘Electrician to Line Worker’ program runs over a two year period. Relevant qualifications range from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma level and are completed with a variety of Training Providers. AusNet Services mentors and rotates Apprentices and Trainees in the workplace to support the best possible learning outcomes and to assist you in completing your respective qualification.

We welcome school-leavers and mature age applicants to contact us. Those completing the programs may be eligible to transition to a permanent position within AusNet Services.

Our qualified apprentices and trainees end up working in a range of different areas across the business – engineering, communications and projects to name a few - in fact two of our general managers started off as apprentices. And if you want to stay a line worker that’s great – we’ll have lots of work for you!

Once you have completed your qualification as an apprentice you can obtain permanent work as a fully qualified line worker or electrical fitter (depending on the qualification you have obtained). If you decide that you want to continue with studies, you may want to consider going for a traineeship.

Once you have completed your traineeship you can continue to work in your area of qualification, or you may wish to continue studying and working at the same time.
